My students have always loved learning about the holiday traditions and beliefs of other cultures!  This topic is filled with opportunities to ALSO teach about geography too!  Plus, it's always great to expand your students' horizons as they learn about other countries.  They will become more culturally aware and the world becomes a smaller, friendlier place for them when they can relate to, and empathize with, other world citizens.

As students move through the primary grades, they should move from learning to read to reading to learn.  Students who struggle with fluency have difficulty reading to learn because they simply aren't fluent readers yet.  Fluency is not the only characteristic of a successful reader but the research is plentiful showing its importance.  Students who can read fluently are able to focus their cognitive efforts on comprehending and interacting with the text.  Are you looking for easy ways to improve fluency levels in your class?  Check out these tips....

Assessing Reading Fluency to Boost Fluency Growth

Looking to boost your students' fluency? Carefully assessing where your students are is key to moving them forward.

In order to accurately assess a student's fluency and guide his or her development, a teacher needs to look at all the components of fluency.  In the simplest of terms, fluency can be divided into three critical components: accuracy, rate, and prosody (expression and smoothness).

What is Reading Fluency?

What is reading fluency? Why do I need it in my primary classroom? How can I help develop fluency?

What is reading fluency?
Even people not familiar with the elements that make up fluent reading, know a fluent reader when they hear one.  They read smoothly with proper intonation.  A fluent reader is easy to listen to and understand because it simply sounds like they are telling you a story.

Why is Reading Fluency So Important in the Primary Grades?

Need Tips for Improving Reading Fluency in the Primary Grades

Why is reading fluency important?
Have you ever tried to learn to play an instrument?  If so, think about those early days of learning the instrument.  I can remember my days in middle school band.  Each note was a struggle!  If I was lucky enough to recognize the note at first glance, then came the struggle of how to hold my lips and which keys should be held down, not to mention when the note was to be played.  After lots and lots of practice, frustration, and even a few tears, the notes started to come more easily.

Looking Ahead to the New Year

I took some time this past weekend to work on my plans for after the Christmas break.  I want to have everything school related FINISHED when I walk out the door on Friday afternoon so I am free to enjoy a few weeks with my family without having to worry about lesson planning.  We will begin focusing heavily on nonfiction text during the second semester.  My lil' pups always love digging into nonfiction text because they are like little sponges always wanting to absorb new knowledge.
I am excited for my lil' pups to get their hands on these.  They loved learning about Christmas traditions around the world because it was easy for them to relate to and make connections.  I just know that they will love learning about New Year's traditions just as much.
We will be learning about New Year's Day traditions in the United States, China, Mexico, Australia, Israel, Denmark, Switzerland, and Greece.
My lil' pups will also be working on writing their own nonfiction informative paragraphs.
I know my lil' pups will just love keeping track of the countries that they visit using this World Passport.
I have placed this unit on sale for 50% for the next 48 hours.
Click on the image above to see a full preview of everything that is included.
This product is linked up with The Primary Gal's 12 Days of Christmas.  Check out the other great deals by clicking on the image above.

Thanksgiving on Thursday: Collaborative Project & Freebie

I am excited to be using this book in my class this week.  It is one of my favorite Magic Tree House books because the kids love the story and learn so much in the process!  Here is a little peek at our learning from this unit last year....

One of my favorite November class projects is also included in this unit.  My lil' pups record their learning about the first Thanksgiving on the back of a pennant made from seasonal scrapbook paper.  Each child's pennant is combined to create a festive classroom display.
Here is a peek at everything we will be working on this week as part of the novel study.
I also created a FREEBIE from this unit that can be used even if you aren't going to read the book.  You can download the Thanksgiving ABC Order for FREE by clicking on the link below.
